Digital Transformation in Greece 2018 report

For the second consecutive year, we take the pulse of Greek businesses, the country's municipalities and the public sector and record Greece's progress over the rest of Europe.

What is Digital Transformation? What steps have the Greek businesses undertaken in this direction? Are they going to work with startups to speed up their digital transformation processes? These, among other questions, are answered in the research published in the extensive report created by Found.ation, in collaboration with EIT Digital (part of the European Institute of Innovation and Technology) for 2018. The research involved experienced business executives who understand the need and challenges of transformation.

For the second consecutive year, we take the pulse of Greek businesses, the country’s municipalities and the public sector and record Greece’s progress over the rest of Europe. There are also examples of good practices, not only from the Greek business world (Papastratos SA), but also from the local governments (Municipality of Trikkaia).

Some of the report’s highlights:

  • Greece is implementing its National Digital Strategy, but is significantly lagging behind other EU countries. According to the DESI (Digital Economy and Society Index) index, Greece holds the 27th place out of 28 member states.
  • In the public sector, although projects focusing on digital transformation are underway, the delays observed are related to lack of knowledge, limited resources, and bureaucracy.
  • More and more municipalities across the country are taking initiatives to develop digital services for their citizens by participating in European innovation programs, but the pace of implementation is not as agile as expected.
  • In the private sector, businesses recognize the need for digital transformation. 82% have already begun to implement their strategy, but only 50.8% of them have created a Digital Transformation or Innovation department.
  • 73.8% of businesses consider it likely to work with startups or external partners to accelerate Digital Transformation processes.
  • Only 36.1% of employers believe that their employees’ mindset is adequately supportive of change, and therefore resisting change is seen as the biggest challenge they have to face.
